THE REASON
My nephew Jay was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of two. I remember the day his parents came to our house after a hospital visit to tell us. He's a senior in college now and still constantly dealing with maintaining his blood sugar levels. He is hopeful for a cure for himself and so many others.

THE PAINTING
On a visit to Charleston, SC we took a horse drawn carriage ride through the city. The tour guide threw down a little half rubber ball with a flag sticking out of it into the street. It was a marker that would guide others to clean that spot after the horse relieved itself. Of course, I thought it was the best thing ever. A simple solution to a problem. Since that visit the ball flags are no longer used. Electronic GPS systems now track the horse deposits. The days of pee flags scattered throughout the streets of Charleston are gone.
I choose to depict the southern tip of Charleston near White Point Garden.  A grass covered center island, some mysterious pillars, a streetlight, a river view, and a horse pee flag on Murray Blvd from days gone by.

Breakthrough T1D

As the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy organization, Breakthrough T1D has played a crucial role in nearly every major T1D breakthrough in history.

No organization does more to improve everyday life with T1D—from therapy development and access, to expanding research, advocacy, and community support. Help us improve and change the lives of people with type 1 diabetes, and advance life-changing breakthroughs on the way to cures.

T1D is an autoimmune disease that is diagnosed in both children and adults and has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. Managing T1D requires constant attention and action—including overnight.

Even with a strict regimen, people with T1D can still experience dangerously high or low blood sugar that can lead to complications and, in extreme cases, be life-threatening.

Contributions to the Breakthrough T1D charts a path to cure, prevent, and better treat type 1 diabetes and its complications—and ensure access to treatments globally.
